Historic Manhattan Townhouse Sells for $21M After Remodel

A historic townhouse, built in 1901 in Manhattan’s Carnegie Hill neighborhood, has found a buyer for $21 million after a price cut and a stylish interior remodel, Mansion Global has exclusively learned.

The six-story townhouse first came onto the market for $29.5 million in 2017, and the price was lowered to $26.9 million last year and then to $24.5 million in September, according to listing history.

It went into contract just one month after getting its new price and closed for $21 million on Nov. 6, according to Lois Nasser of Sotheby’s International Realty. She co-listed the property with Kevin Sneddon of Compass.

“The house was rented out for $64,000 per month until July. After the tenant moved out, we completely redesigned and staged the space,” Ms. Nasser said. Curtains were taken down to let natural light in, and walls were painted white and light gray to replace the original turquoise and red colors.

“It transformed the traditional, elegant home into a more contemporary residence that young families can relate to,” she said. “And the whole fresh new look and a new price did the trick.”

Ms. Nasser declined to disclose the identities of the parties involved in the transaction, which has yet to appear on public records. The seller is listed as a limited liability company in property records.

The buyer was represented by Randall Gianopolus of Sotheby’s International Realty. He declined to comment.

The 25-foot-wide townhouse has 9,850 square feet of interior living space, featuring six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. There is an additional 1,450 square feet of outdoor space, according to the listing.

Throughout, the home features fireplaces, French baked oak parquet panels, French doors and bowed windows. Amenities include a limestone gallery, a mud room, a sauna, a spa, a fully-equipped gym, a 400-bottle wine cellar, a media room with wet bar, a laundry room, and a staff room.

The street level has a private landscaped garden with an outdoor kitchen and a fountain. And the rooftop has views of Central Park, according to the listing.

Located on East 94th Street across from Fifth Avenue, the townhouse is within walking distance of Central Park and many museums, art galleries, cultural institutions and top private schools.
